Helena Vieira has a PhD in Biomedicine from Imperial College of London, UK.
After finishing her 5-years Degree in Genetics and Microbial Biology from Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, she fulfilled some research positions in the molecular and cellular biology fields, in Portugal and UK, and completed severalpost graduations in the human molecular genetics field. Before founding BIOALVO, she was an Associated Professor and Scientific Coordinator of the biomedical and clinical engineering degrees at the Engineering Faculty of Catholic University of Portugal, Lisbon. She also has experience as Principle Investigator at the Biomedical Nucleus at the Engineering Faculty of Catholic University of Portugal, Lisbon. Helena Vieira is President and CEO of BIOALVO since December 2005.

José Filipe Paixão

Chief Financial Officer
Filipe Paixão holds a PhD in Quantitative Finance from Imperial College of London, UK, and a 5-years Degree in Statistics and Operational Research from Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. His professional experience includes Head of Market Research, Risk Management and Financial Controlling at the Portuguese energy company EDP, Quantitative Analyst at BP Finance at their London headquarters and Risk Management Analyst at Banco Comercial Português. He has been President of the Audit Board of APBio (Portuguese Association of Bioindustry) since 2005 and is a consultant in technology transfer. Filipe Paixão was co-founder of BIOALVO and has been a Board Director since then. He joined the Executive Management Team of BIOALVO in January 2008 as CFO.

Luís Amado

Chief Business Development Officer
Luís Amado has a PhD in Plant Molecular Genetics from Instituto Superior de Agronomia, Lisboa, and a degree in Applied Chemistry/Biotechnology from Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He was honored as “Outstanding Student” in his MSc in Science & Technology Commercialisation awarded jointly by the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas, Austin, USA and Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisboa. He was Executive Vice-President, Chief Operations Officer and Board Member at the biotechnology company Biotecnol S.A. during 7 years. In this company he also acted as Chief Financial Officer, HR Director, Marketing & Corporate Image Director and Business Developer. He was one of the founders and then Vice-President of APBio (Portuguese Bioindustries Association). He has a valuable experience in consultancy to several biotechnology start-up companies since 1998 as well as in the elaboration and evaluation of European projects. He assumed the role of CBDO at BIOALVO in February 2007.

Patrícia Calado

Drug Discovery and Development Director
Patrícia Calado holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. She has over 10 years research experience in molecular and cellular biology, namely in the field of “protein aggregation diseases”. She has a 9-year lecturer experience, as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and as Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Genetics and Genetic Engineering Courses for the Degree in Biotechnological Engineering at the University Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias. She joined BIOALVO in September 2006 as Project Manager. In January 2008 she joined the Executive Management Team as Drug Discovery and Development Director.

Sukalyan Chatterjee

Chief Scientific Officer
Sukalyan Chatterjee has a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Rutgers University, USA. He has professional experience as Principal Investigator at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Oeiras, leading research in the neurobiology (Stress and Transcription) field, and as director of a doctoral program at that institution (Programa Gulbenkian de Doutoramento em Biomedicina). Previous positions also include a research fellowship at Harvard University, USA. He is currently an Associate Professor and Principal Investigator at the Centre of Neurosciences of the University of Coimbra. Sukalyan Chatterjee was co-founder of BIOALVO and is a Board Director and CSO of BIOALVO since December 2005.

CEO; CMP Therapeutics Ltd. (The Oxford Trust, Cherwell Innovation Centre), UK
Bruce Savage is a serial biotech entrepreneur with a background of over 26 years in biosciences research, sales and marketing, working with firms such as Roche. In 1992 he founded Cytocell (which is now a leading worldwide manufacturer of DNA probes), and was its CEO until 2001. Bruce Savage has since been involved in a number of new biotech ventures and is actually the CEO of CMP Therapeutics Ltd and runs his own consultancy company, BioQuest.

Frank McKeon arrived at Harvard Medical School in 1986 as an Assistant Professor, was appointed Associate Professor in 1991 and Full Professor in 1998. He held previous positions at the University of California of San Francisco (UCSF). His research focus is on tumorigenesis and cell cycle control with applications in several pathologies. He and his research group have been involved in over 50 international publications.

Gouping Feng is an Assistant Professor at Duke University Medical Center and his research interests have been mainly in brain function, in particular, plasticity, synapses and behaviour. He has been addressing these aspects in some neurological pathologies such as obsessive compulsive disorders and other neuropsychiatry diseases. Guoping Feng has been the author of dozens of papers in international class journals.

Maria João Saraiva has been coordinating several top international projects and has numerous important publications in international journals.
